Backpacking with kids might sound like an ambitious feat, especially if you're new to the whole experience—but trust me, it’s totally worth it! For us, it has become a magical way to unplug from the chaos and reconnect with nature—and each other. We’ve been clocking a lot of backcountry miles, setting up camp under the stars, and it’s brought us closer in ways I never imagined. And guess what? Kids are never too young for their first backpacking adventure. The memories we’re creating are priceless, and I know they’ll stay with my boys forever.
I had this heartwarming moment on January 31st, 2023. I asked my boys about their favorite memories from the past year, and without hesitation, they both said our backpacking trip to Brandywine Meadows. Now, mind you, this trip involved battling heat and swarms of mosquitoes. But despite that, it was their absolute favorite adventure of the entire year. My adventure mama heart swelled with pride that day. Right then, I made a promise to myself: 2024 was going to be packed with more of these trips!
So, we made a list of must-see backpacking destinations for the year, and since March, we haven’t missed a single month of camping. Whether it’s snowshoeing to a cozy backcountry cabin or hiking to pristine alpine lakes for a dip, each trip has been filled with amazing memories. The best part? The boys keep asking for more!
Just recently, we tackled our first three-day alpine trip, and it was a huge success. Along the way, I’ve picked up some invaluable tips that I’d love to share with you. And let me tell you, our early trips were far from perfect. But now that we’ve got our system down, each adventure is smoother than the last.
Getting Started
1. Choose the Perfect Location
First things first, pick a location that matches your kids' skills and endurance levels. Remember, we’re here to have fun! For those initial trips, keep the distances short and sweet. Look for destinations that offer something exciting for the kids once camp is set up. We love hiking to lakes and always bring an inflatable tube for floating—definitely worth the extra pound in your pack! When choosing a destination, check both the distance and elevation to make sure it’s manageable for everyone
2. Make Them Feel Involved
Camping is our family’s ultimate bonding time, so I always make sure the boys are involved in the whole process. From grocery shopping for the perfect trail snacks to packing their own bags and setting up the tent, they’re part of it all. I love showing them the map, pointing out where we are and where we’re headed. They also get excited about making hot cocoa in the morning and finding the perfect spot for our meals. These little tasks make them feel like real adventurers!
3. Snacks, Snacks, Snacks!
Let’s talk about the magic of snacks. On our trips, I pack goodies that we don’t usually have at home. They’re special treats that keep the kids motivated along the trail. I mix in filling options and fun, reward-worthy snacks. My kids are snack enthusiasts, so I always bring more than we need—better safe than sorry, especially in case of emergencies.
Some of our favorite go-to snacks:
• Energy balls
• Peanut butter and Nutella wraps
• Dried mango and bananas
• Nuts
• M&M's
• Sour gummies
• Fruit pouches
• Beef jerky
• Fig bars
4. Pack Extra Clothes
Kids and puddles are an unstoppable duo, and sometimes those rock-hopping adventures over creeks don’t go as planned. Wet clothes can be a trip-ruiner, so I always bring extra layers. In summer, we pack both hiking shoes and sandals or water shoes. In winter, it’s hiking boots and cozy hut booties. Investing in quality hiking gear has been a game-changer for us—quick-dry hiking shorts, merino wool base layers, and a trusty puffy jacket for those chilly nights. No matter the season, extra socks are a must!
3 Must-Have Items
1. Card Game
We love playing games in the tent, and one of our favorites is the base camp card game. On our last trip, we ended up asking each other deep, existential questions. It was both hilarious and heartwarming to hear what my boys had to say. Who knew a card game could spark such epic conversations?
2. Giant Mosquito Net
In the alpine during summer, the bugs can be relentless. So, we bring along a giant mosquito net, rigging it up with hiking poles like our own little bug-free fortress. It's the perfect spot to cook and eat without becoming the mosquitoes' main course.
3. Foam Sleeping Pad
This little wonder is a true multi-tasker! It’s lightweight, and we use it for everything—sitting, sleeping, and even creating a makeshift picnic spot
Adventure Awaits!
Backpacking with kids is an adventure like no other. Sure, there are challenges along the way— mosquitoes, wet clothes, and the occasional grumble—but the rewards far outweigh the obstacles. Every trip we take brings us closer as a family, strengthens our bond with nature, and leaves us with stories we’ll be telling for years. Whether it’s a weekend trip to a local trail or an epic multi-day adventure in the backcountry, these moments are the ones that truly matter. So, pack up, hit the trail, and make some memories that’ll last a lifetime. Adventure is calling— and trust me, your kids are ready to answer!
